According to the first measurements, the constructed mud gully and deep pits around Marker Wadden prove to be effective in trapping excess sediment from the Markermeer.

Researcher Thijs van Kessel: "Including sedimentation on the lee-side around the islands of Marker Wadden, we estimate that approximately 200,000 tons of mud deposited in the gully and pits last year. This means that about the same amount of sediment has been trapped as the average amount of suspended sediment that is present in the Markermeer. This means that Marker Wadden islands significantly influence the mud balance of the lake and thus decreases the turbidity."
