Dit heeft een positief effect op de waterveiligheid. Voorbeelden van natuurvriendelijke golfbrekers zijn schelpdierbanken als mosselbanken en oesterriffen. Wanneer golven breken op de constructie, wordt de energie verminderd, waardoor de golfslag en erosie van de achtergelegen (zachte) oever wordt verminderd (Chowdhury et al., 2019; Manis et al., 2015). Natuurlijke golfbrekers hebben een belangrijke functie in het behoud van zandplaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Met zaaien en kweken van schelpdieren worden natuurlijke kustbarri\u00e8res aangelegd met rifvormende biobouwers. Biobouwers zijn soorten die hun eigen omgeving aanpassen, tot hun eigen voordeel en dat van andere soorten. Hierdoor kunnen zij een sleutelrol vormen in het ontstaan en het voortbestaan van complexe habitats. Door rifvormende schelpdieren kan de veerkracht van de kust worden versterkt.
