Het proces omvat het drogen en structureren van waterverzadigd sediment, waardoor het geschikt wordt voor dijkenbouw. Dit natuurlijke rijpingsproces zorgt ervoor dat het materiaal toepasbaar wordt als klei. Door gebruik te maken van lokaal sediment, wordt het winnen van primaire grondstoffen van elders verminderd, kleirijperij maakt gebruik van lokaal gebaggerd slib. Hoewel verwacht wordt dat kleirijperij meer nazorg vereist dan dijken met klei die aan de standaardeisen voldoet, biedt het voordelen ten behoeve van de natuur. Door lokaal slib te gebruiken, wordt het transport van materialen over lange afstanden verminderd, wat leidt tot een lagere CO2-uitstoot. Bovendien kan kleirijperij een belangrijke rol spelen in gebieden waar regelmatig veel slib wordt gebaggerd.
