{"id":6517,"date":"2020-06-09T14:34:09","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T12:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ecoshape.org\/en\/?post_type=concept&#038;p=6517"},"modified":"2020-09-28T09:26:58","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T07:26:58","slug":"how-to-use","status":"publish","type":"concept","link":"https:\/\/www.ecoshape.org\/en\/concepts\/growing-salt-marshes\/how-to-use\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When salt marshes (or comparable ecosystem engineering solutions with for example mangroves or shellfish banks) are considered to be included in a design for coastal protection or coastal rehabilitation, several questions need answering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is it possible to create a suitable habitat for this specific ecosystem in the project area?<\/li><li>What would be the envisaged services provided by this ecosystem?<\/li><li>To what extent can the ecosystem contribute to the primary function of the design and how does this affect the design itself? For example, what dimensions of a salt marsh are needed to reduce erosion, stabilize sediment or dissipate wave energy?<\/li><li>What effects do the ecosystem engineers in this ecosystem have on the existing physical, ecological and socio-economical system?<\/li><li>What are the costs, uncertainties and risks ensuing from including these ecosystem engineers in the design?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, we focus on the first question, the other questions can be elaborated in subsequent or parallel steps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Determination flow chart<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To determine the suitability of the project area for salt marshes it should be checked whether the habitat requirements are present or can be created. The determination flowchart gives a first answer to the suitability of the project area as a habitat for salt marshes. At the end of the flow chart we assume establishment of pioneer vegetation (<em>Spartina anglica<\/em>&nbsp;and\/or&nbsp;<em>Salicornia<\/em>&nbsp;spp.) with the proper environmental conditions for a sustainable marsh to develop.
