In 2015 werd een totaal volume van 26 miljoen m3 zand gewonnen uit het Nederlandse continentale plat. Vanwege de verwachte stijging van de zeespiegel kan de vraag naar zand om de Nederlandse kust met zand te verdedigen, verder toenemen van 12 miljoen m3 tot 40 &#8211; 85 miljoen m3.\nZandwinning be\u00efnvloedt de ecologie van de zeebodem. Daarom zijn ontwerpregels nodig om het evenwicht te bewaren tussen de ecologie van de zandwinlocatie, de zandopbrengst en de kosten.\nTraditioneel laten baggerschepen een relatief vlakke zeebodem achter na zandwinning (fig. 2, rechter paneel). Een platte zeebodem heeft in het algemeen geen grote biodiversiteit. Daarom is onderzocht of de ecologie verbetert als baggeraars zandruggen aanbrengen op de bodem van de zandwinput. Mogelijk versnelt dat het herstelproces van het bodemleven en bevordert dat de biodiversiteit. (figuur 2, linker paneel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoshape.org\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/diepe-zandwinning-en-ecosysteem-gebaseerde-landscaping-4.jpg\" alt=\"Diepe zandwinning en ecosysteem-gebaseerde landscaping 2\"\/><figcaption><strong>Figuur 2: Seabed landscaping (linker paneel) versus de traditionele aanpak <\/strong><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Op het Nederlandse continentale plat vindt zandwinning plaats in gebieden op meer dan 20 meter diepte (afb. 1). Tot voor kort was de diepte beperkt tot 2 meter onder de zeebodem. In 2000 werden de mogelijkheden voor windieptes van meer dan 2 meter onder de zeebodem verkend. Het bleek dat bij een diepte van minder dan 40 meter de kans op een verminderd zuurstofgehalte in het zeewater vrij klein is en dat organismen op de zeebodem zichzelf kunnen herstellen.\nMomenteel zijn grotere extractiedieptes toegestaan. Voor de ontwikkeling van de havenuitbreiding Maasvlakte 2 van de Haven van Rotterdam, werd 220 miljoen m3 zand gewonnen. Windiepten tot 20 meter onder de zeebodem werden voornamelijk gebruikt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Doel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Voor het Building with Nature-programma was de vraag hoe het herstel van het bodemleven kon worden versneld en hoe de productiviteit en de biodiversiteit van diepzandwinningsplaatsen zoals de Maasvlakte 2-zandwinplaats kon groeien.<br>\nDe vragen waren als volgt:<br>\n1. Wat zijn de de korte termijn ecologische effecten van diepe en grootschalige zandwinning<br>\n2. Wat zijn de ecologische effecten op korte termijn van ecologische vormgeving van de winlocatie<br>\n3. Ontwikkel ontwerpregels gebaseerd op ecosysteemkennis voor toekomstige zandwinningsplaatsen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aanpak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Op basis van gesprekken met mariene ecologen, morfologen, overheden, havenvertegenwoordigers en aannemers, ontwikkelden de onderzoekers eisen en technische parameters die nodig waren voor het ontwerp, de bouw en de monitoring van het experiment. Dit proces droeg bij aan begrip en de acceptatie van de innovatie door alle betrokken partijen. Het herstelproces van bodemleven van de ecologisch verantwoord vormgegeven winputten werd gevolgd. \nHet experiment vond plaats in de zandwinput die werd gebruikt voor de ontwikkeling van de Maasvlakte 2-uitbreiding van de Rotterdamse haven. Tussen 2008 en 2012 werd 220 miljoen m3 uit een 20 meter diep gebied ten zuiden van de Euromaasgeul-vaarroute gewonnen. \nHet experiment betrof selectief baggeren, achter twee zandruggen in het noordelijke deel van de zandwinlocatie. Deze kunstmatig aangelegde zandruggen zijn ongeveer 700 meter lang en 100 meter breed en tot 10 meter hoog. De eerste zandrug (afbeelding 4, linker paneel) is in 2010 gemaakt in het oostelijke deel van de zandwinninglocatie en parallel met de getijstroom. De tweede zandrug werd in 2011 in het zuidelijke deel gerealiseerd, haaks op de getijdenstroom (figuur 4 rechter paneel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoshape.org\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/diepe-zandwinning-en-ecosysteem-gebaseerde-landscaping-3.jpg\" alt=\"Diepe zandwinning en ecosysteem-gebaseerde landscaping 1\"\/><figcaption><strong>Figuur 4: <\/strong><br>Figuur 4: Het experiment met 2 ecosysteemgebaseerde landscaping. Linker paneel: \u00e9\u00e9n evenwijdig aan de getijdenstroom en het rechterpaneel: \u00e9\u00e9n haaks op de getijstroom (afbeelding: Maarten de Jong).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Het herstel van bodemleven op de zeebodem en het v\u00f3\u00f3rkomen van bodemvis op de zandwinlocatie werd elke lente van 2010 tot 2012 gecontroleerd door gebruik te maken van een breed scala aan apparatuur (figuur 5). Voor het bemonsteren van infauna, organismen die in het sediment wonen, werd een boxcorer gebruikt. Sedimentmonsters werden ook verzameld uit de boxcoremonsters. Voor epifauna, organismen die op het sediment leven, werd een bodemschaaf gebruikt. Een beamtrawl werd gebruikt om monsters van bodemvis te nemen. Bodemschuifspanning is de spanning die stroming op het zeebodemoppervlak uitoefent. Dit bepaalt de erosie en sedimentatiepatronen, de samenstelling van het sediment en de aanwezige organismen die op de zeebodem leven. Vijf groepen organismen die in en op de zeebodem wonen, waren aanwezig in de omgeving voor de Haven van Rotterdam (de Jong et al. 2015a).\n1 tot 2 jaar na het stopzetten van zandwinning voor Maasvlakte 2, is biomassa van organismen die in en op de zeebodem leven en de bodemvis 10 tot 20 keer groter dan het referentiegebied (de Jong et al., 2014 en 2015b). De soortensamenstelling veranderde significant. De Abra alba kwam het meest voor. Bodemvissoorten veranderden ook aanzienlijk. Pleuronectes platessa werd de meest dominante soort, terwijl Limanda limanda de meest dominante bodemvissoort is in het referentiegebied (De Jong et al., 2014).\nHet herstel van bodemleven in en op de zeebodem van de zandwinlocatie hangt sterk samen met de sedimentkenmerken en verminderde bodemschuifspanning. Door de afname van bodemschuifspanning en de zandwinningsactiviteiten kwam er meer fijn sediment en organisch materiaal op de zeebodem (De Jong et al. 2015b).\nOp basis van de ecologische gegevens en de berekende bodemschuifspanning ontwikkelden de onderzoekers ecosysteem gebaseerde ontwerpregels, waardoor de schade aan het bodemoppervlak vermindert, de kosten en de CO2-uitstoot dalen en de zandopbrengst van zandwinningsprojecten gemaximeerd wordt. Bovendien zijn de ecologische effecten vooraf bekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Producten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Het programma Building with Nature heeft de ervaringen en resultaten van het seabed landcaping experiment in het Maasvlakte 2-project toepasbaar gemaakt voor andere projecten door de volgende producten te ontwikkelen:\n1. Wetenschappelijke output van de resultaten;<br>\n2. Praktische richtlijnen voor het vormgeven van zandwinlocaties;<br>\n3. Numerische modellen om het gedrag van de waterstroom in de Maasvlakte 2 zandwinlocatie te voorspellen;<br>\n4. Ervaringen over habitatontwikkeling van zeebodemlandschappen;<br>\n5.
