Hun bevindingen presenteerden zij op 27 april in Nature Scientific Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voor het eerst zijn kusten en hun langetermijngedrag op globale schaal geanalyseerd. De onderzoekers konden exact berekenen dat 31% van de totale kustlijn bestaat uit zandstranden. Stranden worden in de gaten gehouden omdat ze kwetsbaar zijn voor veranderingen in getij, windrichting en zeespiegelstijging. Ook merkten de onderzoekers op dat er rond de evenaar en richting de polen weinig zandige kusten zijn. Arjen Luijendijk (onderzoeker Deltares \/ TU Delft): Jarenlang heerste het beeld dat 70% van onze stranden erodeerden. Wij waren verrast om te zien dat de zandige kustlijn helemaal niet zo sterk erodeert. Sterker nog: er zijn meer stranden die groeien dan krimpen. Voornaamste reden hiervoor is dat we goed in staat zijn onze kust te onderhouden (zoals in Nederland) en uit te bouwen (zoals in Dubai en Singapore). Een soms vergeten bron is de zandafvoer vanuit de mijnbouw\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De grootste strandaangroei, maar liefst 8 meter per jaar, heeft plaatsgevonden in Namibi\u00eb en wordt veroorzaakt door een mijnbouwbedrijf die voor diamantwinning zandheuvels in de zee heeft gebouwd. Ook Nederland staat in de top 10 van aangroei vanwege het suppletiebeleid en de aanleg van de Zandmotor. Vier van de zeven grootste stranden die eroderen bevinden zich in de Verenigde Staten. Vooral stranden in Louisiana en Texas hebben het moeilijk. Hier lopen de kusten met soms wel 15 m per jaar terug. In Louisiana komt dit vanwege de Mississippi rivier, waar de zandaanvoer door afdammingen sterk is afgenomen. In Texas komt dit door onder andere door grondwateronttrekking door de snelle groei van Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uit 1,9 miljoen satellietbeelden zijn met behulp van machine learning 50.000 zandige kusten gedetecteerd. Gerben Hagenaars (onderzoeker Deltares): \u201cDit is een gigantische dataset die we met behulp van Google konden analyseren. Dit hebben we gedaan vanaf 1984, omdat toen de eerste satellietbeelden van de NASA beschikbaar waren. Om onze nieuwe methode te valideren hebben we een vergelijking gemaakt met kusten waar veel metingen zijn verricht, zoals in Australi\u00eb, Nederland en de Verenigde Staten\u201d. Cruciaal voor de doorontwikkeling van dit soort technieken is de beschikbaarheid van hoogwaardige, integrale meetsites langs verschillende type kusten wereldwijd. Een internationaal initiatief genaamd ICON (\u2018International Coastline Observatories Network\u2019) gaat voorzien in deze behoefte.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"link-list-block_5ede3aef28ad8\" class=\"block-link-list-inner \">\n            <h2>Opgave voor de toekomst<\/h2>\n    \n            <p>Ook al hebben we globaal gezien de erosie onder controle dankzij goed kustbeheer, op regionaal en lokaal niveau zijn er wel problemen gesignaleerd, met name in de Verenigde staten en Afrika. Lokale invloeden komen bijvoorbeeld door de aanleg van havens of andere infrastructuur, welke de natuurlijke kust dynamiek soms negatief kunnen verstoren. Lokaal is zand ook niet altijd voorradig om de kust te beschermen.
