Germany helps to scale up Building with Nature Indonesia

The German Environment Ministry (BMUB) has granted financial support under its International Climate Initiative (IKI) to scale up the running Building with Nature pilot project in the district of Demak, Central Java Province, in cooperation with the Dutch and Indonesian governments and Ecoshape. This project, managed by Wetlands International, aims to restore the eroded coast where communities face flooding and saline intrusion resulting from the loss of mangroves, land subsidence and sea level rise.

New aspects under the IKI funded programme include integrated water management planning and solutions to the deep ground water extraction which is currently causing land subsidence. The programme furthermore supports mainstreaming and replication of Building with Nature-type solutions that suit urban, rural, muddy and sandy coastlines. BMUB promotes healthy wetlands around the world as part of its ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change portfolio.
