Restoring seagrass meadows

Overview

Seeding, cultivating, and maintaining seagrass in nearshore environments with limited wave action creates rougher seafloor topography. These meadows can influence sediment transport and deposition while reducing coastal erosion. Trapping fine sediments can also limit runaway algae growth. Seagrass thrives in coastal habitats with fine sediment or silty substrates. They provide valuable habitats for fish and important food sources for other marine life.
